Sunday, July 31st, 2011Don’t Try Harder to Improve Your Posture Are you having posture problem? Have you tried a course of posture exercises to correct it? posture shirts Majority will say that they can bring improvement in their posture but how, no body knows. Modern living means we probably are not as active as previous generations. We spend a lot of time in our couches before TV set, in the cars and at office or college desks. In these situations you are not using your muscles as nature originally intended. Some body parts become overstressed including shoulders and neck while others become weaker like lower back area. posture shirt Due to poor posture issue many health experts have developed various types of posture exercises to bring some positive change. However, this approach may be misguided as the focus on specific muscles for improving posture could affect your body’s natural support reflexes. Your body has built-in postural reflexes to coordinate muscular activity for support and movement. In case of having poor posture the reflexes are not allowed to work as they need to do. Over stress makes you stiff your neck and shoulder area. These actions will override your natural mechanisms for balance and movement. Consistent misuse of muscles makes your movement faulty. It becomes a tight situation for you. So the more you will take positions according to wrong pattern, the better adjustments your muscles will make with it. While I encourage following posture exercises to get better posture but in fact such movements create more stress for muscles and joints. Should we have to work core muscles individually to get our body to stand tall? Is it the best natural way to stand? In my role as a teacher of The Alexander Technique I see many people who suffer as a result of poor posture. Most of them were having such issues just because of following various techniques to correct it. Just by trying to stand in a straight way you don’t move towards improving posture rather just put pressure over muscle and joints. You should not waste your time to take position you think is right rather you should lower the stress making your natural reflexes work improperly. So it’s time to focus over poise not posture. Poise seems to be a lost skill at young age. If you are having poise then it means you need little effort to support your body to take various standing, sitting and walking positions properly. You can see this skill in professional athletes and media personalities. Think of Muhammad Ali or Fred Astaire in their prime and that gives you a great example of freedom in movement. I can’t believe that they have followed any kind of exercise to improve their posture. Poise can be achieved just by pushing the stress and tension out of your body and letting it respond to the power of gravity. When you are on top of the world and walk with a spring in your step, you are poised. When you can sit at your desk and feel no tension in your neck, shoulders and back - you are poised. Trying to improve your posture by trying harder will take you further away from your natural poised state. So don’t try - let whatever is beneath you push up and think of letting go to sit, stand and walk taller and you will be on your way to a return to poise.
